Pope Francis: Wine is key to every wedding

Publicado: 2016-06-11

Pope Francis highlighted the importance of wine, citing Jesus' first miracle when he turned water into wine at the wedding feast in Cana, to his general audience in St. Peter's Square, in front of thousands of pilgrims.

"How is it possible to celebrate the wedding and have a party if you lack what the prophets indicated was a typical element of the messianic banquet?" the Pope asked trying to enlighten the people with regard to their understanding of Christ.

One of the important moments that he pointed out was Mary's observation on the newlywed's resources, stating that at a certain point "they have no wine." Moreover, the Pope states that "Wine is necessary for the feast" because "wine expresses the abundance of the banquet and the joy of the feast."

"A wedding feast lacking wine embarrasses the newlyweds, imagine finishing the wedding feast drinking tea? It would be an embarrassment!" Pope Francis said.

However, the Pope's views on wine have placed him in a disagreement with some Protestants, including members of the Southern Baptist Convention and the Assemblies of God movement.

According to the Pope, Jesus' miracle of turning the water into wine makes "an eloquent sign" because "he transforms the Law of Moses into the Gospel, bringer of joy."

The foundation of our faith is "an act of mercy with which Jesus has bound us to himself." The Christian life calls us to "response to this love, it's the story of two lovers."

"The wedding of Cana is much more than a simple story about Jesus' first miracle," Pope Francis expounded, saying that this has revealed Jesus' glory toward his disciples and has strengthen their belief.

The pontiff closed his address saying that "we are all invited to that wedding, because the new wine will never be lacking!" The faith of the Church was born when Jesus' disciples decided to become his family.
